Dr. Hansel Arroyo specialized in psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital, where he focused on providing a variety of psychotherapies and medication management treatments for those needing mental health care.
After completing residency, Dr. Arroyo pursued psychoanalytic training at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute and a fellowship in psychosomatic medicine specializing in treatment of chronic medical conditions, particularly patients living with HIV. He also worked with patients requiring organ transplants and helped develop a psychosocial assessment tool for living donors. His work received the Doorman Journal Paper Award and the Best Article for Original Research Award for 2015.
As an attending psychiatrist at Mount Sinai Hospital, Dr. Arroyo’s career focused on the treatment of individuals in the LGBTQ+ community and those at risk or living with HIV. This work granted him the NIH’s AIDS Clinical Trials Group Minority HIV Investigator Award in 2016.
In 2015 he was named Director of Psychiatry for the Institute for Advanced Medicine and in 2016 founding Director of the Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery, where he developed the nation’s first Transgender Psychiatry Fellowship—a one-year program designed to train medical professionals in various aspects of transgender mental health care.
